Let us save our nation, let us save our life, let us save our rivers

The mountain, which is Africa’s second highest after Mt Kilimanjaro, is the source of scores of rivers that nourish large parts of Kenya.
Destruction of the environment through encroachment, cutting down of trees and unregulated use of water from rivers now threaten to wipe out this water fountain.

Unless some drastic action is taken, there would be nothing but scorched earth in coming decades.

The arid districts of Laikipia and Isiolo depend on the rivers which empty into Ewaso Nyiro, while residents in districts nearby — Nyeri, larger Meru, Kirinyaga and Embu — draw their water from Mt Kenya rivers.

The Tana, where Kenya’s biggest hydro-electricity projects are located, owes its existence to the mountain.

Human encroachment and bad policies over the years have led to the destruction of the mountain’s ecosystem and made water sources to dry up.
Human settlement sanctioned by the former Kanu regime in the 1990s is the one of the major causes of the destruction.
One of the most visible effects happened in Ontulili Forest on the Meru side, where thousands of people were settled on about 2,000 hectares. As a result, residents and rivers from around Mt Kenya are suffering for the sins of the Government, and actions of people around the world. Due to global warming, glaciers on the mountain are melting.

This is devastating as glaciers act as reservoirs, which melt during the hot seasons to ensure rivers flow throughout the year.If this goes on the snow on the Mountain may disappear.

Before this happens, the government should take strict measures to sace these rivers and we all have to play our part in conserving our beautiful environment.

many rivers in kenya are drying because of being neglected by the govt.
Nema has to be strict on cases like this

yes you have a point,Nema should grow some tough teeth that can bite, let them not only concentrate on the issue of slaughter houses.

Good article Duncan...

Would you believe that a McCain supporter like myself has just been funded to produce a ”Green” automobile and a home power source that will do away with ordinary people needing to gain their power from a main power source?

This will eventually alleviate the demand for outside supplied power supplies such as hydroelectric (dams) and coal fired plants.. etc...

This will be a gift to the world and you can mark my words.. A gift.

But the Mealer Companis Aitos will need to be purchased seperatly. Hey.. I need to make money somehow.

Remember, we are on the same side and I truly believe Obama is a danger for all humanity.

Hello Johnstone...

My vehicle and the Green-energy system that I have going into production is all about the ecology this article is about.

In order to produce product and offer this product, we do need the proper political powers in office in the USA.

Besides.. you’re the one who blamed this on your gov’t...

”we do need the proper political powers in office”That makes sense, you know it is this powers that either blunder with our environment or make it.

What a shame... My country is knwn for letting our resources go to only the wealthy, but they do have harsh punishments for trees and ecological resources... Somehow haven’t figured how to handle the crime and pollution, but gotta start somewhere.. Are there any other organizations that can help you?
2 Stars
Yes there are,for instance an arm of the government called NEMA is there for the environment and we have many NGOs that are for the course.

Duncan, can’t we start our own NGOs that will help that course by afforestation and prevention of river banks?

i support the idea, but still it is better to work with existing ones.

all are ok,we can start new ones and also see if it is possible to work with existing ones.

I went to Kenya almost 14 years ago and remember it as a cool destination. it surprised me that there were no fans used at homes in Nairobi. I loved this country, it was where i spent my honeymoon. I hope the pristine beauty stays fresh forever!

it is endangered.

if somebody doesn’t take his job seriously, even the funds set aside to help clean the Nairobi River won’t help us
1 Stars
am sure you are saying this because we all know that the funds might end up in people’s pockets with very little going to the project funding.
