Why would obama want to do a lot for Kenya?

When he said corruption was dragging Kenya down, Kibaki through his spokesman (Mutua) and Ambassador (Agego), said Obama didn’t know what he was talking about. They are yet to recant that.

By any stretch, Obama does not owe Kenya anything. He is under no obligation to do anything (let alone ”a lot”) for Kenya. That the Kenya government could very well be at the centre of what drove Obama Senior to his (premature) death is not particularly romantic.

It is for Kenya to learn from Obama’s story. Whether Kenya has the capacity or inclination to so is doubtful. Let Kenya not blame Obama for its collective stupidity.

But what is it that Kenya wants delivered?

Obama cannot order US tourists to travel to and spend their dollars in Kenya. Even if he had the capacity to do so, Raila’s hoodlums will eagerly be at hand to pluck off the railway and block the highways ”to defend democracy”. Or Kibaki’s homeboys will be anxious to decapitate or castrate ”foreigners”. Not an entirely groovy setting for tourism.

Or maybe Obama could issue a directive for US investments to flow to Kenya. If he can... Only to later contend with government bulldozers because their businesses are on ”road reserves”. Never mind that they have government documents establishing their ownership of the same.

Kenya needs to sort itself out before it can expect, let alone demand, anyone else to ”deliver” on its behalf.

True Duncan, but a reasonable man in the White House is likely to be dragged down by imbeciles in State House and other Grand Houses across the continent.

The great expectations on Obama by the diverse potentates across the continent (or anywhere else) are self-serving and, not surprisingly, foolish. No one should even bother to use them as yardsticks for Obama’s performance.

Obama’s election alone is lesson enough to occupy the African continent for several generations before it can even begin to ask him to look favorably this way.
